“Virtual” Flight Education Program

  • The Four Forces of Flight

Have you ever wondered what keeps a massive airplane—weighing hundreds of tons—effortlessly suspended in the sky? It's not magic, but a perfectly choreographed battle between four fundamental forces. Mastering this aerial tug-of-war is the core of flying, and it's what every pilot must understand.

  • Aircraft Flight Controls

Master flight controls and surfaces with Greenwood Military Aviation Museum. Our expert-led sessions cover key components like ailerons, elevators, rudders, and flaps, offering hands-on learning and detailed insights into flight dynamics, safety, and control. Enhance your aviation knowledge with practical skills for both historic and modern aircraft.

  • Word Search on Forces of Flight and Flight Control

Challenge yourself with our Forces of Flight and Flight Controls Word Search—an engaging puzzle to test your knowledge from the first two lessons. The perfect companion to challenge you through an interactive way. Elevate your aviation knowledge!

  • How an Engine Works

Learning about aircraft engines shows important aviation engineering ideas. From how jet engines take in air and burn fuel to how piston engines work, each part creates thrust and keeps planes safe. Seeing these developments explains how modern planes fly.

  • More Aircraft Parts and Functions

Ready to uncover information about advanced aircraft parts and functions? Moving beyond the basics like wings and rudders, explore the hidden (or not so hidden) complexities that make the world of flight so fascinating!

  • Crossword Puzzle and Museum Visit

Experience aviation uniquely with our exclusive Aircraft Crossword Puzzle and Greenwood Military Aviation Museum video tour. Challenge your military aviation knowledge with expertly crafted clues and uncover fascinating facts. Enjoy a virtual tour of iconic exhibits and aircraft. This immersive experience blends learning and exploration, offering aviation enthusiasts an engaging journey through history and heritage.

About the Program

Since 2003, the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum (GMAM) has offered a Flight Education program that supports the Annapolis Valley Schools grade 6 Flight Syllabus.  Normally,  students are provided with a 2.5 hour guided tour by the many GMAM volunteers.  The tour covers technological and historical developments of Flight at 14 Wing Greenwood since 1942.

We realize it is not always possible for these visits to take place. This is why we designed our Virtual Flight Education program to provide the tools, which can also enhance in-person visits.

In order to enhance this experience, Mr. Glenn Matthews, a GMAM volunteer, produced a 90-minute during school visit in 2015. Using this tool, students and teachers can now take a self-paced virtual tour of the same areas. The video is also divided into 16 clips, 3 to 17 minutes each, viewable in any order, though following the menu order is recommended for the best experience.

To compliment the educational video, we recommend watching a tour of the museum through the eyes of a drone. Piloted by Royal Australian Air Force exchange officer Flight Lieutenant Andrew Bartlett, pictured below, they meticulously went through our museum to give you a unique perspective from above.

Your continued feedback on the is greatly appreciated so we can continuously improve these tools.
