AD Astra
Ad Astra holds deep historical significance for the RCAF. The phrase is rooted in the service's original motto, Sic itur ad astra – "Such is the pathway to the stars" – which was adopted when the Canadian Air Force was first established in 1920. When the force became the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1924, it temporarily adopted the RAF's motto Per Ardua ad Astra ("Through Adversity to the Stars"), before returning to Sic itur ad astra in 1968.
Today, "Ad Astra" serves as a powerful memorial to those who served. At Canadian Forces Base Trenton, over 11,000 stones engraved with the names of RCAF and allied air force personnel are called "Ad Astra Stones," honoring the sacrifice and dedication of generations of airmen and airwomen.
Ad Astra encapsulates the RCAF's enduring spirit of perseverance and aspiration. It reminds us that the path to achievement requires facing adversity, and it connects today's Royal Canadian Air Force to its proud heritage – especially since the RCAF name itself was restored in 2011 as a return to Canada's military roots.
