Accessioning - Donations

There can be no dedication to Canada’s future without a knowledge of its past.
— John Diefenbaker, 13th Prime Minister of Canada

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The vast majority of the items we receive are donated to the museum as gifts from current serving members, veterans, and the families of former Canadian Armed Forces members. On occasion, items have even come from flea markets, yard sales or have been acquired through other means like E-Bay.

  • Careful and thorough consideration is given to every item before we accept it into our collection. Similar to many other museums, our available storage space is limited and must be used thoughtfully to preserve the integrity of our exhibits.

  • Once we’ve agreed to acquire your donation, we provide you with a copy of the paperwork completed for the transfer into our archives. From there, we assign an accession number, enter it into our database and our Collections team prepare the item(s) for storage or display.

  • Sometimes there are items offered to us that do not have any direct connection to our museum’s mandate or other practical uses within our collection. In such cases, we make every effort to connect the donor with a more suitable institution or museum that may better appreciate and preserve the item. We are committed to assisting donors throughout this process to ensure their contribution finds a fitting home. If, after exploring all options, no appropriate placement can be found, we respectfully thank the donor for considering our museum and politely decline the donation.

  • If you are interested in donating to our museum, please give us a call, email, or come for a visit. Be prepared to provide information about the item(s) you are wanting to donate and we will connect you with our Accessioning team.
