pictorial history of AVRO Lancaster KB839 compliled by Herb Smale is now
available for purchase at the Museum Gift Shop.
RCAF
Lancaster KB839 was built by Victory Aircraft Limited at Malton,
Ontario, in 1944. It now resides in the Heritage Aircraft part of the
Greenwood Military Aviation Museum located at 14 Wing Greenwood, Nova
Scotia. Since its manufacture it has served as a heavy bomber with 419
"Moose" Squadron of 6 Group, Bomber Command during the Second
World War; as an Area Reconnaissance aircraft with 408 "Goose"
Squadron operating in our northern refions; and, as a display aircraft
at 14 Wing Greenwood.
The publication contains
a detailed account of each of the twenty-six bombing missions carried
out by 419 Squadron crews while flying in KB839 against German targets
during the RAF's bombing campaign of the Second World War. It also
describes the conduct of highly classified reconnaissance missions flown
by 408 Squadron crews in our Arctic regions at the height of the Cold
War. Finally, it describes the major modifications carried out by 14
Wing Greenwood technicians since 1964 which have led to its current
configuration as an example of the circa 1950s Maritime Reconnaissance
Lancaster flown by 2(M) OTU, 404, 405, and 407 Squadrons.
