Designed
and manufactured by the British company, AV Roe (AVRO), the
Lancaster entered RAF service in December 1941. The Lancaster
was
designed as a heavy bomber but also saw service with Coastal
Command.
There were 7,377 Lancasters produced, with the first flight
occurring
13 May 1941.
Several
RCAF squadrons flew the Lancaster in Bomber Command and, after
WWII, 404 and 405 Greenwood Squadrons were equipped with the
Maritime Reconnaissance version.
This
painting by Douglas Comeau, former member of the Canadian Forces,
depicts Lancaster VR-A of RCAF 419 Squadron in which Pilot Officer
Andrew Mynarski was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his
heroic action during the night of 12 June 1944.
